Reuse, resell, refabricate and recycle!

Interesting news from Nissan: in an effort to cut the cost of producing all-electric cars, the Japanese manufacturer has announced plans to begin selling used batteries.

Not any old batteries, you understand – we’re talking about the lithium-ion batteries typically used in electric cars themselves. These powerful, high capacity batteries are the single most expensive component in the whole vehicle, and the option to sell them on for recycling when they have reached the end of their useful lives (usually after four years) will allow the manufacturer to cut the initial, showroom cost of the car.

The so-called 4R initiative (Reuse, Resell, Refabricate and Recycle) could also mean lower leasing costs for fleets.
