Switching off

Forecourt sales are falling, reports the Department of Energy Climate. During the first three months of 2010, petrol station sales dropped 5.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Figures from the Department also revealed that four per cent less fuel was sold to UK motorists in 2009 compared with two years ago, and that traffic levels were one per cent lower.

Is anyone really surprised by this? Motoring has never been more expensive, thanks to the relentless tax rises imposed by the previous government in the midst of a global economic downturn. And the revenue-hungry coalition has disappointed many by declining to cut fuel duties. More and more motorists have little choice but to switch it off and leave the car at home.
