Low Carbon Buses Being Bought For Greener Environment

In what could be seen as the biggest push for cutting Co2 emissions and embarking on the green journey, the UK Department of Transport has sanctioned a GBP 30m Green Bus Fund to procure 349 low carbon buses. As the name suggests, the low carbon buses will be cutting back on CO2 emissions in UK and signal a steadfast and strong resolve to move towards greener environment.

Most of these 349 buses will be hybrid buses. However, at least 55 electic buses will be bought as well. These buses are expected to start service from next summer and by March 2012 all buses will be operational in the cities and rural areas.

These buses consume up to 30% less fuel than conventional buses. Not only will this assist in fuel conservation, but the resultant use of green technology will lead to improved CO2 emission controls. As of now only 0.2% low carbon buses comprise the total fleet of buses in the UK. The introduction of newer buses should help in adding some sanity to the skewed numbers of low carbon buses vis-a-vis the conventional buses.

And one of the positive impacts will be on the bus manufacturers of UK. The move is expected to safeguard 1000 jobs in the bus industry, and thereby provides an impetus to the manufacturing industry of UK.

At the Business Fuel Cards, we welcome the move of the Department of Transport and hope that this will cut back CO2 emissions and help us establish as a greener country.
